SUNY STUDENTS ACROSS THE STATE RALLY AGAINST GOVERNOR PATERSON’S CUTS
ALBANY (10/30/09) –On Wednesday, October 28 and Thursday, October 29, 13 SUNY institutions participated in the Many Voices, One SUNY campaign by hosting rallieson each campus. Over 10,000 signatures were collected over the two-day period on a petition headed for Governor Paterson’s office. Hundreds of calls were also made to legislative offices in Albany.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better turn out. Students rallied together to stand up for what they believe in,” said Cariann Quick, Director of Governmental Relations for the SUNY Student Assembly and graduate student at SUNY Albany.
The Many Voices,One SUNY campaign is part of the SUNY Student Assembly’s initiatives to combat Governor Paterson’s proposed budget cuts. Other SUNY schools will continue to hold petition drives and make calls to legislators throughout next week before legislators vote on Governor Paterson’s proposed Budget Deficit Reduction Program.
“By 12 p.m., we had students reporting that when they made calls, they were being told by staffers that hundreds of students were calling. Offices had to stop taking comments and just start taking names because the phone lines were being flooded,” said Kyle Hill, Associate Director of Government Relations, a junior at SUNY Oneonta.
“10,000 signatures means 10,000 students are aware of what’s going on. Albany can not ignore this,” Quick said.
Alfred State,Oneonta State College, Upstate Medical University, SUNY Geneseo, Plattsburgh, Suffolk County Community College, Orange County Community College, University of Buffalo, Cortland, New Paltz, Binghamton University and Cobleskill all participated in this week’s rallies.
Next week it is anticipated that Hudson Valley Community College, University at Albany, Monroe Community College, Nassau Community College, Oswego, Rockland Community College, and Broome Community College will host rallies of their own.
